Smith Rock State Park is a day-use area, open dawn-to-dusk, year round. There is no access gate, so the park road is always open, but Rangers often ticket vehicles parked here after dark.
One-day parking passes are available for purchase ($5) at the yellow pay machines located in each of the three main parking areas. The machines accept credit cards or exact bills; no change is provided. You can also purchase a one-year ($30) or two-year ($50) Oregon State Parks Pass from Oliver Lemon's Market in Terrebonne, or at the information kiosk here at the park.
Smith Rock is located in the Oregon high desert, with four distinct seasons. Expect hot summers, cold winters, and quickly changing conditions in spring and fall. Keep in mind that during the winter there may be ice on the trails, and you will need to bring plenty of extra water in the summer. With an average of 320 sunny days per year, almost any time of year can be perfect for a beautiful day at Smith Rock. The most crowded times are when moderate temps and holidays align, such as spring break, Memorial Day and Labor Day. During these times parking can become an issue.
Permits are not required for hiking or climbing on a personal basis. Permits are generally required for commercial activities or special events, however. If you are planning a special event such as a wedding, professional photo shoot, etc. contact the park office at 541-548-7501.
Dogs are allowed on leash. For climbers: be sure your dog is always under someone's direct control, ie. not tied up at the base of your climb. Rangers often ticket for unsupervised or off-leash dogs.
Smith Rock Climbing Guides is located on site and leads rock climbing outings daily for all ages and experience levels, by reservation. For those seeking a tamer adventure, they can lead hiking or interpretive outings as well.
An up-close view of Monkey Face requires either a two or four mile hike. However, you can drive to within a half-mile of Monkey Face and get a good view of it from NE 9th Street. As you are leaving Smith Rock State Park, turn right on NE Wilcox and drive 0.6 miles, then turn right on NE 9th Street. Then look for the 350 ft pillar off to the right with a face like a monkey! It is best appreciated in the afternoon or evening.
